Selkirk got the game underway kicking down the slight slope into a strong breeze. Within a minute of the start Gretna's Dave Wallace received a caution  for handling the ball in the centre of the pitch, Wallace would have to be careful for the remainder of the game.
First corner of the game came in the second minute when Inglis turned behind a Finney effort. The danger was cleared and play raced to the other end with Anderson firing narrowly past from outside the area.
The visitors then had a prolonged spell of pressure with Selkirk desperately defending to keep their goal intact. In the fifteenth minute the "hoops" took the lead after Longcake waltzed past two defenders before drilling the ball into the bottom right hand corner of the net, 1-0.
The home side had little time to recover before Milligan doubled Gretna's lead firing home from 12 yards assist by Anderson, 2-0 in the eighteenth minute.
Continued pressure by the visitors saw them go further ahead when Anderson got on the end of a Atkinson inswinging corner to the near post for the simplest of goals, 3-0 with only 21 minutes gone.
Longcake was denied his second by the woodwork after beating two defenders his curling twenty yard strike came thumping back off the post.
Selkirk stage a comeback with a goal from Phil Addison when he found himself free to shoot in off the post. The revival was short lived as Gretna went further ahead when Sam Atkinson's free kick was headed into the net by Harley in the 40th.minute. More misery was to follow just before the break when Pyper headed into the home goal from Atkinson's free kick from a similar position, half time score 1-5 in Gretna's favour.

The visitors made a change at the beginning of the second half with Danny Graham replacing Connor Graham in midfield. Two minutes into the second period Anderson went close from an Atkinson free kick. Goal number six arrived in the 55th.minute when Anderson was presented with an opening by Milligan and the big number dispatched the ball into from close range.
Gretna manager Stuart Rome then took the opportunity to replace Anderson and Blake with Cassidy and Halliday as the game was beyond the home side.
Milligan was proving to be a thorn in the Selkirk teams side as he ran onto a Cassidy pass and stroked the ball into the net for his second of the game making the score 1-7.
Gretna's eighth came about when a move down the left with Longcake putting Slattery in behind the defence, Slattery picked out Milligan on the penalty spot and the Gretna number ten slotted the ball into the bottom corner in the 79th.minute.
Selkirk were completely overrun and the Gretna forwards were enjoying plenty of possession and would have been in double figures had it not been for the Selkirk keeper who denied Slattery on a couple of occasions as well as a point blank save from a Milligan effort. But he couldn't get near Longcake screamer of a shot from 15 yards that almost uprooted the net making the final score Selkirk 1 - Gretna 9.
