Gretna
FC 2008 v Vale of Leithen
Scottish
Lowland League
Raydale
Saturday
3rd January 3pm
As
the year turns so perhaps do the fortunes of Gretna FC 2008 also stand on the
cusp.
They
go into Saturday’s Lowland League fixture in second spot, five points behind
the leaders, Edinburgh City, who have games in hand, and five points clear of
their nearest rivals, Spartans, also with games in hand.
Having
beaten one bogy team, Threave Rovers, last week by the narrowest of margins, it
will take a heroic effort against another, Vale of Leithen, to confirm the
Raydale side’s credentials as title challengers. It will be a difficult task.
The Innerleithen side have overcome traumas off and on the pitch and have the
bragging rights from the earlier league encounter which finished 3-2. Overall
results between the two sides stand all square with Vale having inflicted
Gretna’s biggest defeat two seasons ago.
While
there have been some departures from the Raydale ranks in recent weeks, Gretna
manager, Stuart Rome has been reaping the rewards from a new consistency in a
settled Gretna side committed to the future of the Borderers.
In
a seasonal gesture members of the Gretna Youth Academy and a parent will be
admitted free of charge to Saturday’s game.
Whether
2015 is looked back on as the year in which 2008 took yet another step forward
or merely cemented their position may hinge on this fixture. Not one to miss.
