Gretna FC 2008 goes into a
double header this week against the students of Edinburgh University.
Saturday sees them in Lowland
League action against Dorian Ogunro’s side at their newly refurbished
Peffermill ground, brought up to League standards for the University’s entry
this season to the Lowland League.
The University currently sits
in 12th place in the league, six places behind Gretna. While they
have found points hard to come by in their inaugural season, compounded by
having to play their early games away from home due to their ground
improvements, they can point to a draw against Spartans and the defeat of Vale
of Leithen as marks of what they can achieve. They also nearly had the scalp of
Junior aces, Hurlford United, who they took to a replay in the William Hill
Scottish Cup.
The earlier league match at
Raydale went Gretna’s way. In a closely contested match, goals from Mark
Worrall and Rob Halliday taking the points for the Raydale side. However the
well organised Edinburgh University side showed they can be a hard team to
break down.
While Gretna has won their
last three away games the students can be counted on to compete and a close and
enthralling encounter is expected.
Although both sides play in the Lowland League they are also both
members of the East of Scotland Football Association and it is their Image
Printers Cup which sees the two sides come together at Raydale on Wednesday
evening, 12th November with a 7.30 pm kick off. Gretna has won the
cup twice in their short history, in 2010 and 2013. The cup winners qualify to contest the
East of Scotland Cup against Berwick Rangers.
