In the time-worn phrase,
Gretna FC 2008 can now concentrate on the league following their injury time
dismissal from the William Hill Scottish Cup last Saturday at the hands of
Queens Park.
The players are left to
rue Darren Miller's injury time strike which was deflected past unlucky Jamie
Greenall in the Gretna goal. Before then, despite a 13-1 corner kick ratio in
the Spiders' favour, Greenall and his defence had dealt effectively with
everything the higher league side had thrown at them.
Manager Stuart Rome was
proud but disappointed after the match, "I told the players before the
game that if they gave Darren Miller a chance to strike he would take it.
However I am proud that over the whole of the match, my boys showed that they
are a match for SPFL opposition."
Ironically Gretna travel
to the team they put out in the first round of the cup, Gala Fairydean Rovers,
this weekend in the Lowland League. Gretna sit in mid table while Gala
lie 3 points behind them. Although Gretna have games in hand they will need to
push ahead on Saturday to make up ground if they are to be in the mix up for
the play offs at the end of the season.
They will have to cope
with the unaccustomed 4G artificial pitch at Gala's Netherdale ground, one of a
number provided by Borders Council to football clubs in the District. However
they proved more than capable of doing so last season, coming away with a 6-2
win.
