Gretna FC 2008 v Gala
Fairydean Rovers
Scottish Lowland League
Saturday 17th
January
Raydale Kick off 3pm
The
blast of wintry weather thwarted Gretna’s ambitions to catch up on League
leaders, Edinburgh City, last weekend but they resume the chase on Saturday at
home to Gala Fairydean Rovers.
With
twin strikers Iain Anderson and Scott Milligan sharing top spot in the League’s
Golden Boot competition with 15 goals each, Gretna’s goal tally is the best in
the league at an average of just under 3 goals a game. Whilst the mood in the
Gretna camp is positive, they won’t be taking anything for granted in the visit
of the team from Galashiels, however.
Last
season the raiders from the Borders turned the form book on its head to snatch
a 2-1 victory in revenge for a 6-2 stuffing at Netherdale. Gretna again did the
business this season at Gala, running out 4-0 victors in the first league
encounter and Stuart Rome and his team are determined not to let history repeat
itself.
Gretna
are on a nine game winning streak while Gala are famously inconsistent. Gretna
has pushed forward on the back of a pared-down squad. Big name departures
including Rudd, Renyard and Rea, have left Rome with a regular playing squad
which is benefitting from playing as a settled side.
This
season’s Lowland League winners will have the chance to compete for a place in
the Scottish Second Division. It’s a long shot that Gretna will be able to
catch up on the League leaders to join Annan Athletic in the Division but it’s
a chase that the Raydale side will not give up on.
