Hoops manager Stuart Rome made several changes from the team that lost at home last week to Edinburgh City. In came Ross Halliday, Danny Graham and Jordan Barker in place of Dean Rea, Adam Main and Mark Worrall.

Gretna kicked off the game down the slope and nearly took the lead when Iain Anderson got on the end of a long clearance but was denied a goal when Preston keeper Gilbertson deflected the ball around the post for a corner.

The visitors were caught by a counter attack and should have gone a goal behind but somehow Prestons Martin lifted the ball over the bar from three yards out with goal at his mercy.

Darren Addison tried a shot from 30 yards but Gilbertson was equal to the Gretna midfielders shot and turned the ball behind for another corner.

The home side fought bravely to keep out the Gretna onslaught with Gilbertson rescuing his side on a number of occasions. Gretna captain Alan Inglis tested the home keeper in the 15th.minute, the keeper tipping over a ferocious Inglis free kick. Jordan Barker then tested the keeper when he rose to fire in an acrobatic volley which the keeper caught under the bar on the goal line.

A mistake by Robson Halliday let in Moore who screwed his shot wide of the target from ten yards with Greenall out of position. After this let off the visitors took the lead when Halliday struck from wide on the right wing and his cross come shot ended in the back of the net along with Preston keeper Gilbertson looking at fault with his positioning, 0-1.

It was end to end football with the wind and slope proving difficult to provide any quality play from either side with Anderson tirelessly chasing over hit passes. Preston’s Martin gave Inglis and Wallace a tough test in the first half but the home forward couldn't manage a clear shot a goal and Greenall didn’t have to make a recognised save. H/T 0-1.

First action of the second half came from a Gretna attack when Barker intercepted a poor back pass to the Preston keeper, Barker nipped in between the Todd and Gilbertson but his lofted shot was too high and just cleared the crossbar. Barker was back on attack shortly afterwards this time running onto a Connor Graham and was denied a goal by Gilbertson.

Gretna went two up after Brandon Longcake fired home a loose ball from 12 yards. At this point of the game Gretna replaced Barker with David Renyard on the left wing. The Gretna sub was in the action immediately just shooting wide from 18 yards after linking up with Anderson on the left.

Preston were up against a defiant pair in defence with Wallace and Inglis marshalling the defence and giving little ground.

Darren Addison was the stand out player for the visitors with his aggressive energetic style in middle gave the Preston midfield little time on the ball.

Anderson twice had efforts blocked when it looked likely the big striker would score as the home defenders threw themselves in front of goal.

Gretna manager Stuart Rome brought on substitute Mark Worrall for the tiring Anderson and Gavin Cowper for Connor Graham.

As the game entered the final minutes both sides squandered chances and the game finished Preston Athletic 0 Gretna Fc (2008) 2.

Gretna FC 2008 v Queens Park

For the cup game on the 4th of October the Wee Bar will be open from 13:30 for away
and home fans , the bar will be closed while the game is on , but open at half time and
again after full time , the bar will be open until midnight, with music from our own music
system.

Gretna FC 2008 Press Release

Gretna’s home defeat to table toppers, Edinburgh City, last Saturday was a frustrating one as they spurned chances to settle the game in the first half. Wallace, Longcake, Graham, Anderson and Worrall all hit shots that on another day would have put the game beyond the Edinburgh outfit. The second half swung City’s way following a hotly disputed penalty.

Talking to reporters after the match, Gretna’s manager, Stuart Rome, rued the missed chances, “we should be putting these chances away but we’ll work on it and on another day we could be scoring four or five. We let the penalty throw us and another thing we have to learn is to accept these setbacks, put them behind us and concentrate on our game plan.”

Gretna’s opportunity to put Stuart’s words into effect come quickly this Saturday when they travel to Prestonpans to meet an out of form Preston Athletic who are sitting at the bottom of the table after dispensing with the services of their manager, ex-Gretna favourite David Bingham.

Gretna will be without Joe Slattery who suffered a broken wrist in the Gala cup tie, and Lewis Todd who suffered a leg injury. Both are anxious to return to fitness for next week’s cup tie against Queens Park at Raydale. Joe said, “I didn’t realise that I had broken it until it ballooned up on the Sunday morning. I went straight to the hospital and got it strapped up and I’m hoping to play next week.”

On the plus side, the returning David Renyard is approaching match fitness after a couple of run outs from the bench.

Adam McMath has left the club. One of the original squad formed in 2008 Adam has been a loyal servant to the club, scoring many important goals. However Adam’s opportunities were limited following the signing this year of last season’s South of Scotland leading scorer Iain Anderson. Adam has received an offer to play for Northbank in Carlisle and goes with the best wishes of the club and its supporters.

The football saying made famous by TV pundit Jimmy Greaves “ a game of two halves” could well be used in this instance. With the home side playing a Jekyll and Hyde performance, the first half belonged to Gretna with enough chances to win several games, all went begging and in the second half they created very few chances.

Gretna kicked off towards the Loanwath Road Stand and soon put the visitors on the back foot when Dave Wallace ran onto an Alan Inglis flighted free kick but the centre backs header flew over the City crossbar.
Next to go close was Brandon Longcake who cut in from the right wing but his shot flew over the bar.
City did venture into the Gretna half of the field and were rewarded with a corner in the 10th.minute. The home side went ever so near to open the scoring but Worrall was just out of reach from a Longcake cross. 0-0.

City’s number 8,Dougie Gair was fortunate not to collect a caution when he clattered Gretna’ Iain Anderson 30 yards from goal. Inglis' free kick flew harmlessly into Stobie’s arms and the danger was gone.
The visitors defence were having to work hard to keep Gretna out and Anderson should have opened the scoring in the 20th.minute when Main slipped the ball inside the box for the big forward to strike, his shot was deflected behind for a corner.

Jordan Caddow suffered a “dead” leg after a collision with Greig Thorburn and limped off to be replaced by Grant Vanson in the 25th.minute. With most of the play Gretna could not find the back of the net as City were struggling to cope with the home sides pacy attack. In the 32nd.minute Chris McKee entered the officials notebook for a reckless challenge on Anderson. An Inglis free kick on the left found the head of Wallace whose header produced a spectacular acrobatic save by Stobie, as he ficked the ball over for a corner kick.

Again the City goal survived another scare, this time a lobbed pass by Main to Connor Graham across the 18 yard line saw the youngsters shot beat Stobie but also eluded the far corner of the net and out for a goal kick. 0-0.
Five minutes before the break Throburn got round behind the City defence and his inch perfect cross into the six yard box was agonisingly headed over by Worrall when it appeared easier to score.
The visitors almost took a shock lead just on half time when Ross Allum broke free from his marker but his rising shot hit the top side of the crossbar and over. H/T 0-0.

The visitors kicked off the second half and looked to have changed their formation as they began to press the Gretna defence. However the first strike of the second half came from Gretna’s Connor Graham, but his long range effort was wide of the target. In the 49th minute City’s Allum went to ground after a Dean Rea challenge inside the box and the official awarded the spot kick which Gair duly converted sending Greenall the wrong direction, 0-1.

The home side appeared to struggle to adjust and passes were going astray and mistakes started to creep into their play. The Gretna support thought their team had won a penalty for themselves in the 65th.minute when Anderson broke down the right only to be felled from behind by McKee on the edge of the area. With confusion amongst the officials players were momentarily left wondering what the outcome was to be, eventually a free kick was given to Gretna and McKee escaped caution, Gretna’s Graham was not so fortunate and was cautioned for dissent. Inglis swung in a low cross to the near post but Worrall could only steer the ball harmlessly behind. 0-1.
Stuart Rome made his first substitution replacing Thorburn with David Renyard and Jordan Barker for Worrall. Rea picked up a caution in the 80th.minute for a reckless challenge and was followed shortly afterwards by Adam Main for a similar challenge. As the game entered the final stages Gretna launched everything into attack as City sat back waiting for their opportunity to hit on the counter and it came in added on time when Allum fired home a Mark Osborne cross to put the result beyond the home side. There was just enough time for the official to issue a red card for Allum for over celebrating. F/T 0-2.

Gretna get a home draw against division 2 Queens Park

Gretna have drawn Queen's Park in the 2nd round of the William Hill Scottish Cup. The oldest association football club in Scotland will visit Raydale on Saturday 4th October for the 3.00pm ko.

Following this weekend's William Hill Scottish Cup first round ties, I write to provide you with an update for today's Second Round draw.
